Joomla!を設置すると、joomlaの説明や使い方などを書いた記事、メニュー、レイアウトなどが事例として組み込まれる。自分のサイトだが、あたかもJoomlaプロジェクトのサイトのようだ。事例サイトとして利用し、学習しながら自分のサイトに仕立て上げていくのがいいのだろう。

少し試したが、機能的にはXoopsと同じようだが方式や仕組みがかなりちがう。Xoopsではモジュールが基本にあって、モジュールにどのコンテントをどこにどういう順番で配置するかを決める。また、モジュールごとにユーザアクセス権限を与えることができる。

Joomlaも同じようなことができそうだがもう一つ分からないことがある。とくにセクションとカテゴリの関係だ。コンテンツの最小単位は記事Articleで、記事ごとにセクションとカテゴリを割り当てるようになっている。それは分かるが、トップやサイドに配置するメニューとの関係がどうなるのか、セクションとカテゴリの使い分けや活用の仕方がよく分からない。それもサイト構成のノウハウなのだろう。

もうひとつ理解しないと使いこなせない機能は、新しいセクションを作るときに選択するレイアウト形式だ。十数種類もあるので混乱する。Example Pagesという記事を見つけたが、もうひとつExample Pages and Linksという記事もある。前者はサイドメニューのなかにある。それによると、つぎの４種類のページレイアウトがあるそうだ。

• Section Blog
• Section Table
• Blog Category
• Category Table

ここでまた混乱する。トップメニューのAbout Joomla!をクリックすると、 What's New In 1.5?という記事が表示されていたのを、Menu Managerを使って、Example Pages and Linksにリンクするように変更した。Aboutをクリックすると確かにこの記事が表示された。その記事を読むと、「左側のメニューに４種類のページレイアウトがある」と書いてあるのに、そのメニューが表示されない。ところが、左側メニューにあるKey Concepts>Example Pagesをクリックすると、Key Conceptsの下に、Example Pagesというメニューが表示された。本文にはAboutのリンク先であるExample Pages and Linksが表示された。

ここまで書いて思考がすすむと分かってきた気がする。Example Pages というのはメニューリストの表示と同時に特定のページを本文伊表示する機能だということだ。自己完結で説明と、その説明に対応する左メニューも表示できるということだろう。これは便利な機能だが、どうやって作るのかな？

とりあえずここまでだ。なお、この記事は、組み込まれていたJoomla! Overviewに追加している。記事入力ボックスの下にあるPagebreakをクリックすると、改ページされる。Read moreをクリックすると、MTブログなどと同じように「続きを読む」というリンクになる。ここではPagebreakを使って、原文（英語）を次ページに残しておく。※これも便利な機能だ。Wiki風の目次は自動作成される。

Joomla! is different from the normal models for content management software. For a start, it's not complicated. Joomla! has been developed for everybody, and anybody can develop it further. It is designed to work (primarily) with other Open Source, free, software such as PHP, MySQL, and Apache.

It is easy to install and administer, and is reliable.

Joomla! doesn't even require the user or administrator of the system to know HTML to operate it once it's up and running.

To get the perfect Web site with all the functionality that you require for your particular application may take additional time and effort, but with the Joomla! Community support that is available and the many Third Party Developers actively creating and releasing new Extensions for the 1.5 platform on an almost daily basis, there is likely to be something out there to meet your needs. Or you could develop your own Extensions and make these available to the rest of the community.
